Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
