England and Welsh Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
