Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
