In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
