Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
